3 + NOLA

Photobucket
Our girl turned three at the end of May. My oh my how she is growing up. "I can do it myself" is her most common phrase these days. She is rarely seen without a baby doll in her arms, loves playing with water, being outside (even if it's hot), is ornery and silly but can also be very well behaved! She is incessantly inquisitive – pretty much always talking, unless there is music, in which case, it is VERY loud and she is usually dancing, jumping and spinning.

Speaking of music, we made a big trip to New Orleans just after her birthday for Carl's PawPaw's 90th birthday + Hebert family reunion. We spent two days in New Orleans and of course, Grace danced to the jazz in the French Quarter, and on our swamp tour she held a live two year old alligator! Brave girl. More pics to come.

It's gonna be a bright...bright sunshiny day!

Thanks to Uncle Steve, who captured these shots of our girl and her sweet cousins at the Rockwood Easter Egg Hunt the Saturday before Easter. He is amazing at capturing just the right moments. Fun to spend time together, too!

Easter

Photobucket

Easter was so fun this year! Twelve days leading up to Easter, I read a special Bible story about Jesus with an egg Gracie got to open for each story. Each egg had something in it. Like on the 11th day, we read the story of Jesus on the cross, and the egg had a nail and a Band-Aid in it. (Gotta break it down for the little ones. Jesus went through some pretty hardcore stuff.) On the 12th day (Easter), the egg was empty because the tomb was empty! She's been asking for her "Jesus story and egg" almost every day since then...I guess that's how good habits can be made. I wasn't really sure what kind of an impact it would have on her.

She loved dyeing eggs together, and hunting them at my folks' house before our big Easter dinner. Mimi and Papa gave Gracie her pretty Easter dress and sandals (Momma tried to do a cute 'do - Mimi said she looked like a little Dutch girl), Nana and Grampy gave her a bubble mower, and we gave her a little bubble gun. She loved it all.

Carl + Cake

Better a little late than never: Carl celebrated number 31 on March 29th. He is such a good husband and daddy. We are so lucky we get to love him on his birthday and always.

I made this amazing rich delicious peanut butter and chocolate glazed + peanut butter frosted + chocolate cake for him, not because I am amazing, but rather thanks to my friend Rachel, who gave me the recipe! All of the little tips were so helpful -- I love recipes like that. I highly recommend the cake, and celebrating birthdays! Cheers to Carl and many more!

Really Super High

We've been doing a lot of this lately! And she always asks if we will push her "really super high!"

Also, as an addendum to the Big Girl Bed post, she fell out of bed early Monday morning. Thought we had a poor little broken nose, but thankfully it was just swollen and badly bruised. Hasn't seem to affect her spunky disposition at all!

Big Girl Bed

Photobucket

Our little girl just moved up in the world. A lot of people told us that the transition from a crib to the big bed would be one of the hardest transitions we ever endured. Praise the Lord, it has been one of the easiest! She has relished this special new vintage + funky + comfortable big girl bed. The beautiful antique wood bed and dresser were refinished and purchased from Abbe Doll. (Now you, too, can have your very own All Dolled Up creations at The Cottage Collective – conveniently, its grand opening is March 30th!)

This girl loves to read. She is never far from a book!

This is a sweet addition to her big girl room. Took me only two years to compile into this shadow box. I got the idea from my sweet step sister in-law. Can't believe that is really our girl on the announcement. Where did that baby go? Sigh. Good thing we have an adorable big bed to romp and read on and make the time flying years worthwhile.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time there was a beautiful house. In Peabody, Kansas. It was majestic and charming, full of rooms and windows. Made of brick and adorned with ivy. It has a deep history in our family. It is treasured for that history and all the memories it holds. It is where my mother grew up.

My grandfather traded it with an aunt for a much smaller home in 1957, I think?

As a young girl, my mother got locked out on the balcony by her mean older brothers.

My parents had their wedding reception there, and made a crazy getaway for their honeymoon after all parties thought they'd blocked my Dad's car.

In 1986, my Papa fell off the roof and landed on the concrete on his feet, shattering them. (Miraculously that was all, and he's still walking just fine!)

My brother and I spent many weekends there with Nana and Papa – we would call my folks long distance, play endless card games, "cook" in the kitchen, play the baby grand, take Chrissy dog for walks, and have Nana lovingly wave cigarette smoke away from our faces, saying "Bless your heart..."

My mom's brothers came to town recently and a cousin of theirs has purchased the home and is furnishing it as a bed and breakfast. We are thrilled it's back in the family. Here, a few token pictures from our visit to 501.

Those "mean brothers" turned out to be very nice uncles:

Whenever I see this view of the house I think of the story my Nana told about how she was cleaning and a soliciting woman rang the front door bell, Nana answered, declined whatever she was peddling and went back to cleaning. The doorbell rang again, except the woman was at this side door, thinking the large home was divided into multiple residences.
